Four programs selected to attend the 2019 Families Learning Conference through Innovation Grant
7th October, 2019
The National Literacy Directory recently selected four programs to receive $1,000 Innovation Grants to attend the upcoming Families Learning Conference (November 4-6) in Louisville, KY:
MSAD 52 Adult Education (Turner, ME): Razell Ward from Maine School Administrative District (MSAD) 52 will be attending her first-ever Families Learning Conference. MSAD 52 is located in rural Western Maine, where transportation barriers can be a challenge to adult learners. Razell is excited to learn innovative strategies for addressing these transportation barriers, as well as strategies to better incorporate family literacy and community collaboration in MSAD 52's established adult education program.
CAP Services (Stevens, Point, WI): Phong Vang will represent CAP Services at the Families Learning Conference. CAP Services' Hmong UPLIFT program currently provides family literacy services, but by attending the Families Learning Conference, Phong will learn innovative ways to empower families through culturally-specific practices and improved program outreach. Phong is also excited for valuable networking opportunities and inspiration to take back to CAP Services.
Tarrant Literacy Coalition (Fort Worth, TX): Wes Young will be representing Tarrant Literacy Coalition, an adult education program serving learners in Fort Worth, TX for 10 years. Wes plans to develop future partnerships and attend sessions on storytelling techniques, which will benefit Tarrant Literacy's large community in North Texas. Like many organizations, Tarrant Literacy has limited funding available, and Wes plans to learn how to tell Tarrant Literacy Coalition's story to funders in a compelling way.
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (Augusta, ME): Virginia Marriner of Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LVA) is excited to attend the Families Learning Conference to learn how to better support tutors and integrate technology into instruction for adult learners. LVA provides free, low-barrier services, and Virginia plans to attend sessions that will help LVA continue to support volunteers, adult learners, and the community of Greater Augusta.
